Ragnorak

Digital Illustration

For the Beginning[s] & Ending[s] anthology by Ipsy Bipsy Studio, I contributed a mythological illustration depicting the Norse tale of Ragnorak. This risograph-printed book celebrates traditional human origin and apocalypse myths from various cultures, curated and edited by Erica Federhen.

I delved into the original sources of the myth in the Prose Edda and Poetic Edda, selecting key elements like the battle of the gods, the crowing rooster, and the two human survivors sheltering in the roots of the world tree. I sketched these studies of ancient Norse artwork to explore traditional illustration styles in order to incorporate them into my own approach.

My choice of Blue and Red ink for my page in the book symbolizes the clashing forces of fire and flood. With Clip Studio Pro, I meticulously drew the colors separately in greyscale, employing color overlay and layer modes to mimic the risograph ink appearance. This method granted me precision, so that I could dial up pure vivid colors or blend deeper, more muted ones as appropriate.
